Job Title: Postdoctoral Research Fellow – Rheology and mechanical properties of associating polymers

Background:
Applications are invited for a postdoctoral research fellow opening with Prof. Savvas Hatzikiriakos (Chemical and Biological Engineering) and Prof. Laurel Schafer (Chemistry) at the University of British Columbia (UBC).
This project is being supported by NSERC, the national funding agency of Canada. The project centres around the development and characterization of a new class of associating polymeric materials with adhesive and self-healing properties. The ideal candidate will have an interest in collaborating with an early stage start-up, a2o Advanced Materials Inc., specialized in associating polymers.
This project requires experience in the characterization of the mechanical and/or rheological properties of synthetic model polymers. Desirable to have experience with the specific sub-classes of (1) associating/hydrogen-bonding polymers (2) superhydrophobic and/or fluoroalkyl polymers.
Main Responsibilities:
(1) To perform rheological testing of associating polymers (hydrogen bonding)
(2) To perform mechanical testing (self-healing and adhesion) of associating polymers to develop new coating technologies;
(3) Preparation of polymer formulation methodologies, including spray-coats, film solution casting, polymer blends.
(4) To liaise with research sponsors and ensure successful project completion.
(5) Experience in SEM/TEM/AFM and other imaging techniques an asset.
Required Qualifications: PhD in chemical engineering/polymer-materials chemistry/mechanical engineering with good chemistry background or a related discipline.
Compensation commensurate with experience.
